Chapter Eight
Helena stared at Reed. The cat was watching her rather closely. His whiskers twitched as he shifted his front paws. âYou have nothing to say?â
She clutched the furs closer still feeling cold despite the layers of blankets and furs covering her bed. She closed her eyes and drew a deep breath before opening them again. âOur hosts are dragons?â When he nodded, she frowned slightly. âWhat do they want from us?â
âWant?â Reed cocked his head. âThat is what you are concerned about?â
âWe are not out in the weather, lost in the wilds, or in immediate danger of being roasted alive by our hosts,â she pointed out calmly. âThe last of which is rather puzzling given everything ever written about dragons, or so Trista and that ridiculous book claimed. Given how the Five Kingdoms went to war in order to drive the dragons out, I do not see why a family of dragons would simply give us shelter. It is far more likely that there is something they want from us.â Her frown returned as she regarded the cat. âDo they say that you reek of dragon magic too?â
He scowled at her. âIt was mentioned.â
âI see.â Helena worried at the edge of the furs as she considered the dilemma. âWell, they must not be inclined to eat us if they havenât already done so, especially to silence you.â
The cat huffed. âI donât believe that insulting me is any way to resolve this, Helena.â
She was slightly surprised when he didnât stalk off in a temper, although he continued glaring at her through narrowed eyes. She raised her gaze to the smooth stone ceiling as she continued turning the matter over in her mind. There had to be some sort of reason for the dragonsâ interest in keeping them alive. âYou are certain this family is not connected to the dragon at Carabas?â
âI promise you, Lady Helena, that we are not,â came the soft assurance.
Helena dropped her gaze to meet the mismatched gaze of a blonde woman. She smiled without even giving a hint that she noticed both Helena and Reed had stiffened slightly. She raised her arms, which were overflowing with a pile of clothing. âI brought you some old clothes of my oldest daughterâs since you two are closer in height.â She glanced at Reed and added, âMaster Reed, my husband would like a word with you.â
When the cat didnât immediately move, Helena gave him a nudge. âGo, talk to the dragon.â When he still didnât move, she grabbed him and dropped him over the edge of her bed ignoring his yowl of protest. âGo, Reed, we need information. Do not be rude.â
He glared at her, shaking his back paw in disgust, then trotted past the length of green fabric that covered the doorway.
Helena shook her head. Reed had been acting strangely ever since she woke up. Of course, he had been in a huff when she refused to let him be morose over Carabas. There was a time and a place for the discussion of what had happened, but now was not that time.
